Marwiyah

Marwiyah, 40 years of age, is truly an innovative woman. She lives in Sungai Beras, the coastal side of Jambi, where the palm trees are lining up along the riverside. All this time, those trees and the fruits were wasted.

Then, she heard the story about how people in the old days turned these palms into salt. “I don’t know how they did it. No one knows.” She said.

Marwiyah did some experiments assisted by facilitators from KKI Warsi who linked her up with the organic food network. The fruit was made into dodol, a delicacy. The midribs were developed into salt. The midribs were chopped finely, dried and burned down. “The ashes were boiled until the water is receded. The deposit from this process is the salt.”

Of course, this experiment needed trials and errors before it was finally succeeded. She kept trying until the palm salt was perfect. For 50 kg of midribs, she could only produce 500 grams of salt. “People said, this salt is good for those who are diabetic and hypertension. This is a healthy salt.”
