Etha Handayani Taihitu

Anyone who ever visited Tempo Institute must be familiar with Etha Taihitu. Her bubbly personality made it easy for everyone to be friends with her. Her laughter is loud and free. A friend said that her laughter shakes the walls.

Etha joined Tempo Institute since 2009, together with Ema Mayeaya. “I was so happy that Mardiyah never seemed to bother that I was only a high school graduate,” Etha admitted that she learned a lot in Tempo Institute. “I used to be trembling whenever I meet new people, now I am full of confidence. Hehe.” Etha was also delighted that Tempo Institute helped her continuing her education through night classes.

For Etha, who is originally from Toraja, life is not about personal matters. There is a traditional burden that she could never let go no matter what. “Every time there is a cultural ceremony back home, for instance, when a relative passed away, my mother would call me and ask me to send some money to buy pigs.” In a year, the request to chip in for traditional ceremonies could come for three times. “That was quite a lot, actually. The price of a pig is around 5 million.”

Etha did not consider these expenses as burdens. “Well, it is costly, but that is part of my life. I have to be able to manage to save.”
