Feminism In Action

Feminism In Action

Thank you to all ina-ina (ladies), for the friendship and sincere smile. It was an honour for me to meet you and experience the amazing sisterhood in Lembata, Adonara, Larantuka.

Perempuan Kepala Keluarga (PEKKA) had mesmerized me. There are 1,500 members of PEKKA in NTT. They are all single women, widows by death, widows by choice because they refused to take part in polygamy practices, survivors of violence, all who bear life and the cost of raising a family. “We all did ola sita inawae, women who walk while opening the path for others.” Dette Deram L Belen, the field facilitator of PEKKA NTT, said.

The save and loan cooperative has become the heart of PEKKA here. Every month, members will save Rp. 1,000, create many businesses to ensure collective income flows in (making palm sugar, weaving, VCO, etc.), also provides assistance for members who want to start their own business.

“We went around, we create small classes, assisting ina-ina to create their own businesses. Documenting, counting the advisability of the business,” Petronella Masi Suban, the leader of PEKKA union of East Flores said. “It is not easy, because 95% of women here are illiterate. But we force them to do basic writing and counting, everything must be documented.”

Bit by bit, the hill is taking shape. The cooperative’s asset grew. Every member can get a loan up to Rp. 50 million per person, to start their own business, pay for their children’s education, or for traditional ceremonies need. “We use the collective loan system. So, all members in each group must help each other.” Susana Rawaborot, field facilitator of PEKKA NTT said. “No bad credit record.” She continued.

Mira Yusef was right, she said, “I see feminism in action here. Not just theory or talking only.” Salute, ina-ina!

It was a hella fun trip!
